As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow gained 1.1%. The S&P 500 was up 7 tenths of a percent. And the Nasdaq gained 8 tenths. Comex gold traded up $22 at $2,559.80 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.34 a barrel, trading at $75.86.
In an example of how Wall Street interprets good news as bad, shares of Nvidia fell 7% in after-hours trading yesterday. It was the result of CEO Jensen Huang’s earnings report that the chipmaker had once again exceeded expectations in the second quarter, issued a revenue outlook another 8% higher this quarter, and self-confidently announced a $50b stock buyback. But because Q2’s sales were less of an excess than the two previous ones, investors saw that as a sign that growth for the company was slowing and took their profits by selling. Those profits were considerable since the stock is up 150% so far this year. The market is treating Nvidia as a bellwether for tech because its clients include Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, Tesla and other Silicon Valley high flyers. Nvidia is second only to Apple in market value and now accounts for 6.6% of the S&P 500 stock index. But its huge success is responsible for one fourth of the S&P’s 18% gain this year. Ford and Lowe’s are the latest companies to retreat from diversity, equity and inclusion goals. Both cite conservative activist attacks and legal costs. As recently as 2017, Ford had boasted about its recognition by the Human Rights Campaign as one of the best places to work for LGBTQ equality. Harley-Davidson, Tractor Supply Co., John Deere and others have recently revised or pulled back on their DEI programs, support for LGBTQ events and gay Pride marches, strategies to slow climate change and other social policies. Hollywood music video director turned conservative activist, Robbie Starbuck is once again claiming credit for the recent corporate policy changes. He recently told CNN that he is “exposing” companies and that he only wants corporate America to stay out of social issues and remain “neutral” even though he received conservative Republican and right wing activist support for his failed attempt at being a write-in candidate in a 2022 Republican Congressional primary. But USC professor and founder of its Race and Equity Center, Shaun Harper says Starbuck is revealing how haphazard the support for DEI initiatives is within many corporations. (CNN business)

ABC News plans to only allow the microphone of the candidate who’s turn it is to speak to be live in the September 10 Presidential candidates’ debate. The Trump campaign has accepted those rules. Pushback on this final point of order is coming from the Harris campaign. Harris campaign advisor Brian Fallon says it’s clear the Trump campaign is only agreeing to mic muting to preserve the debate when it’s clear their candidate wants a hot mic at all times. Speaking in Virginia on Monday, Trump said it didn’t matter to him, that he’d probably rather have them on, but that the agreement was that it would be the same as last time. Mic muting was used in the Biden-Trump debate. (CNN business)
Proudly wearing the mantle of underdog, Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky is making chicken salad out of … you know. Upon finding it was ranked third on an internet click-bait list of most-disappointing US tourist attractions, Mammoth Cave’s promotional team posted an invitation on Facebook for visitors to “experience what has disappointed millions of people for over 225 years!” The post has been shared more than 30k times. It’s too early to know if the campaign is working. But five years after the state of Nebraska debuted its “Nebraska … honestly, it’s not for everyone” slogan, tourist interest in visiting the state rose from 19% to 39%. (morning brew dot com)
On this day in music history – August 29,
- 1959, The Quarry Men, consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ken Brown performed at the opening night of the Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool. The teen club was owned by Mona Best, mother of future Beatles drummer Pete Best. The group used one shared microphone connected to the house PA.
- In 1964, Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” is released, going to #1 four weeks later. The title was inspired by Orbison’s wife, Claudette interrupting a conversation between Roy and co-writer Bill Dees to say she was going out. When Roy asked if she was OK for cash, Dees interjected, “A pretty woman never needs money”.
- In 1965, The Beatles played the first of two nights at the Hollywood Bowl. Tickets were $3. The concert promoter was local DJ and TV host Bob Eubanks, who the year before had mortgaged his house to make The Beatles first LA concert happen. Recordings from both years were released in 1977 as the album “The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl”.
- Exactly one year later in 1966, The Beatles played at Candlestick Park in San Francisco before a sellout crowd of 25k. John and Paul brought cameras on stage to take pictures between songs, knowing what fans didn’t – that this would be their last concert for a paying audience.
- In 1970, Edwin Starr began the first of three weeks at #1 with “War”.
- In 1977, three people were arrested in Memphis after trying to steal Elvis Presley’s corpse. As a result, his remains would be moved to Graceland.
- In 1987, Los Lobos began the first of three weeks at #1 with their cover of “La Bamba” from the movie about the life of Ritchie Valens.
- In 1990, Elton John checked in a Chicago rehab center for treatment of bulimia, alcoholism and drugs.
- In 1992, U2 became only the second concert act to perform at New York’s Yankee Stadium. Billy Joel was the first.
- In 1999, Lou Bega was at #1 with “Mambo #5” – the cover a song composed and recorded by Perez Prado exactly 50 years earlier.
- In 2009, the Los Angeles coroner confirmed that Michael Jackson’s death was homicide primarily caused by the anesthetic Propofol. Jackson had suffered cardiac arrest and died at his LA home in June at the age of 50.
