Applying to Avenues

Admissions for the 2024-25 Academic Year

The deadline to submit a Preliminary Application Form was December 4, 2023. We welcome applications after this date to be considered for any remaining openings following our Regular Notification round. Please scroll down to learn more about the application process.

Test-Optional Admissions

Avenues New York is test-optional. This means that students are not required to take and submit standardized tests for admission to Avenues. Applicants who do not submit test scores will be at no disadvantage in our holistic admissions review. At the same time, we will evaluate testing, in context, when submitted. Students may opt to take the ISEE or SSAT. Typically, students who submit standardized test results score above the 75th percentile, both overall and in each section of the test.

Visiting Campus

This spring, Avenues will offer in-person and virtual school visits for families to learn more about our dynamic school community and academic program. As part of the application process, all parent conversations will take place virtually.

Small World Grown-Up-and-Me Program

Avenues offers Small World Grown-Up-and-Me for students as young as 12 months old accompanied by their parent or caregiver. To learn more and register, please click here. Families that join us for this program may apply for the 1s or 2s program this fall to continue their Avenues journey in the following school year.

Application Round Choices

First Choice Round

We are pleased to offer an early round for families who have determined that Avenues is their first choice school. The first choice round at Avenues is binding. Families whose child is admitted under first choice round agree that their child will enroll at Avenues and withdraw their applications to other schools. Families applying for financial assistance are welcome to elect this round and will have earlier access to our generous but finite financial aid budget. As in our Regular Notification round, we aim to meet 100% of a family’s demonstrated financial need at time of admission.

Please note that a majority of open seats are filled each year via our first choice round. In addition to new families who have determined Avenues is their top choice, most siblings and colleagues’ children apply in this round to receive priority consideration. Applicants who are not offered admission in the First Choice Round may either be deferred to Regular Notification for additional consideration from the admissions committee or not offered admission, which is a final decision for the academic year.

Regular Notification

Regular notification almost always follows the ISAAGNY calendar. Please aim to submit your preliminary application form and complete your application requirements well ahead of the deadlines. This will allow your family ample opportunity to schedule assessments and the parent conversation, request current school documents, and also have a chance to visit campus.

Late Notification

We welcome applications to be considered for any remaining openings following Regular Notification. Kindly note that we practice both highly selective and holistic admissions and that financial aid is typically quite limited following Regular Notification. Late Notification candidates with complete applications will receive admissions decisions following Regular Notification. Please contact our admissions team with any questions.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Avenues New York seeks to build a student body that reflects the diversity of the great city we call home. For the 2023-24 school year, Avenues provided more than $17 million in financial aid to nearly 400 students who qualified for need-based grants. Financial aid is typically available for Kindergarten through Grade 12. We aim to meet the demonstrated financial need of each admitted family at time of admission. However, please note that admission to Avenues is highly selective and we are unfortunately unable to admit all deserving candidates given our generous but ultimately finite financial aid budget.

We encourage you to consider Avenues even if you cannot afford the full cost of tuition, as you may qualify for need-based aid. In fact, we will waive the application fee if you are applying for financial aid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Avenues looking for in an applicant?

There is no single profile of an Avenues student and all applicants are considered on their completed application. Avenues seeks students who can thrive in a rigorous, collaborative and creative learning environment. Avenues strives to have a student community diverse in interests, talents and backgrounds, and the application process is designed to assess all these aspects equally.

What standardized testing is required?

Avenues is test-optional. Students who are applying to grades 2-4 may opt to take the ISEE Primary. Students who are applying to grades 5-12 may opt to take the ISEE or the SSAT.

Are there minimum test scores needed to be considered a competitive applicant?

We do not require a minimum score for any form of standardized testing. Each candidate is assessed against a range of criteria; standardized test scores represent only a portion of the application that we review. With that said, for those who do submit testing, results are typically above the 75th percentile, both overall and in each section of the test.

What is the birthday cut-off?

Small World, nursery, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students must be two, three, four and five years old respectively by August 31 of their year of entry.

Applicants to grades 1 and above are assessed based on the last year of completed school. However, applicants are encouraged to apply for the grade to which they are eligible based on the August 31 birthday cutoff.

Are first choice letters or personal recommendations required?

Neither first choice letters nor personal recommendations are necessary. If Avenues is your first choice, we advise you to apply in the First Choice Round.

Can an applicant reapply?

Applicants are welcome to reapply for the next admissions year.

What is the application process for international students?

International students are expected to follow the standard application process and submit all requirements. We will work with you to schedule mutually convenient appointments and assessments taking into account the time difference with New York. As always, please contact us with specific questions at admissions-ny@avenues.org or +1 646-664-0800.

What is Avenues’ policy on immunizations?

All students attending Avenues New York are required to have up-to-date immunizations as outlined by the New York State Department of Education. If students are not compliant with the New York State immunization requirements, they will be excluded from school until they receive the vaccines. On rare occasions, a medical exemption is available. Medical exemptions are granted when a New York State licensed physician certifies that an immunization is detrimental to a child’s health. Such medical exemptions waive the requirement for a particular immunization until the immunization is no longer detrimental to the child’s health. By law, children holding a medical exemption must be excluded from school during any disease outbreaks. Per New York State Law, religious exemptions are no longer accepted. A copy of the immunization policy is available from admissions upon written request to admissions-ny@avenues.org.
